(6/10/11 Jetmore, KS) Recently, the Great American Dirt Track in Jetmore was named to talkracin.com's list of Great American Tracks. This list includes Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio which hosts the two biggest dirt late model events in the country each year. The list also includes Toyota Speedway at Irwindale, just outside of Los Angeles, California which hosts the All Star Showdown each January. Another noted track is Texas Motor Speedway, which hosts NASCAR events and Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, KS which was the site of last summer's Discovery Channel reality show "Heartland Thunder."
"Obviously this is big for us. We are in some elite company with tracks like Eldora and Texas Motor Speedway," stated speedway owner, Patrick Johnson. Johnson purchased the 3/8th mile oval prior to the 2010 season and is going strong in his second year. He brought the biggest late model race west of Missouri to the track. The Sunflower State Showdown took place in April and drew a field of late models twice as big as the first year, with fan interest nationwide. A staple of the track, "The Steve King Memorial" has continued and thrived on Memorial weekend, as it pit's the nation's best 360 sprint car drivers up against the local standouts. Johnson was also able to expose the Great American Dirt Track to a national television audience earlier this year. His USMTS Modified race, from last season, was part of the hit reality series "Dirt Knights" which aired on the Versus Network.
Talkracin.com is an all encompassing motorsports website, following motorsports from the weekly level to NASCAR. "I have a close friend and his wife who travel the country in their motor home watching NASCAR races," said Phil Wiseman, owner of talkracin.com. "They also drop in on local tracks here and there, and give me a heads up when they find an appealing track, such as Jetmore. I also put my ears to the ground and heard some very nice things about the place. That combination was why it was one of the tracks featured in our series." Wiseman would go on to say, "We'd love to see folks from all over the country visit local tracks, like the Great American Dirt Track, more often. It's a great experience and very affordable in comparison to other entertainment venues and/or vacations."
One final major event will take place on Thursday August 11th. The USMTS Modifieds will be back to kick off their "Hunt for a National Championship." This event should draw fifty or more cars and will pay $3,000 to the winner.
"I really would like to thank the staff for their hard work and dedication to the Speedway," stated Johnson. Lorne Benish is the general manager, and he and his wife are a big part of our success. We also have a great group of partners who believe in the track and support us. Their help is invaluable to making this a true destination venue and showpiece."
